A story from Bocholt, Belgium

United in tradition

St. Kristoffel, the protector of all travellers, holds a special place in the hearts of the Martens family. The history of St. Kristoffel church in Bocholt has been closely intertwined with the history of the family brewery. The locals believe that his patronage helped save the brewery in the time of wars and other adversities. To honour St. Kristoffel, a special beer was brewed, in the best tradition of Belgian Abbey Style top fermented lagers.

This secret recipe has been passed on from one generation of Martens family to the next, together with the great story of the saint. Today, Kristoffel Abbey Style beers are our way of keeping the faith in the family tradition. So, take a quiet moment to savour the authentic bitter taste of Kristoffel.

2019 Martens Brewery

Brewery Martens has been in business for 260 years. Throughout our rich history, which remains embedded in our native town of Bocholt to this very day, the brewery has always remained in hands of the Martens family. Yet, while we put great store by our family history, all eight generations of the Martens family have also continuously been driven by innovation and state-of-the-art processes, which is what has made us into one of the most modern and innovative breweries in the country today.
